Frederic Cafarella is a queer Massachusetts based artist who will graduate from Montserrat College of Art in May of 2025 with a Bachelor of Fine Art with a Concentration in Photography/Video/Film. They work mainly in photography, both digital and film, and are concerned with capturing the texture, color, and drama that is present in everyday subjects and environments. They have also worked in other mediums such as painting and sculpture, with a focus on the natural elements of the world. They have exhibited work in various Montserrat shows and galleries, as well as in “Historic Beverly’s Icons, Myths and Legends” at the John Cabot House in 2022.

Artist Statement

I have always been a physical person, gravitating towards the feeling of something solid in my hands or underneath my body, the feel of some texture foreign to my own. My art is no different, taking many forms that require me to move and stretch, filling a space with a flurry of motion. I work primarily with photography (both digital and film), with a heavy focus on the details and textures and light of the natural world. When I’m shooting, I am extremely present, and I feel the most at peace. I allow myself to slow down and really attend to everything around me. In the studio though, I have been working with people, shooting portraits that I feel capture their personalities and quirks. I utilize the studio to its fullest extent and experiment with different ways to create a feeling in the viewer.

When I am not shooting, I experiment with other tactile media, with the intention of turning an ephemeral idea into something tangible, something I can hold in my hands and protect. My hands are always moving, even when I am not making art, so I might as well make the best of it.
